Now in the sixth round, the Global Participation Fund (GPF) grant program have disbursed over 500,000 since its launch since its launch in 2022 to build equity into ORCID adoption around the world.
The GPF contributes to one of ORCID’s strategic priorities outlined in the 2022–25 strategic plan — Increasing Global Participation. Specifically, the GPF focuses our efforts to increase ORCID adoption in the Global South, especially in countries with low- and lower-middle-income economies (as defined by the World Bank).
This most recent round of awardees will receive a total of $91,500 — four in the Community Development and Outreach category, and one in the Technical Integration category. Grants for Community Development and Outreach are meant to financially support the development of ORCID Communities of Practice as well as the creation of resources to support ORCID consortia that serve those regions. Technical Integration grants are meant to support software development to build and update ORCID integrations in open-source systems that will enable or facilitate participation in ORCID in Focus Community regions and the creation of technical documentation, outreach, and support for resources created through the grants.
Congratulations to the following organizations for their projects that will help increase the trajectory of ORCID adoption across the globe!
Grants for Community Development and Outreach
Advancing Research Visibility in Nepal with ORCID
Open Access Nepal proposes to establish a national network of ORCID Communities of Practice to enhance research visibility, credibility, and collaboration across Nepal. This project will drive widespread ORCID adoption through targeted outreach, multilingual training, and technical integration support in partnership with key academic and governmental institutions. Through sustained community-building and strategic engagement, the project will ensure long-term transformation of Nepal’s scholarly ecosystem.
Expanding ORCID Awareness and Adoption in the Arabic-Speaking Research Community
This project by Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN) Gemeinnutzige GmbH aims to increase ORCID awareness and adoption in Arabic-speaking countries through localized training, Arabic-language resources, and targeted outreach. Led by ASREN, it will engage researchers, librarians, and institutions, building communities of practice to support ORCID integration. The project supports the Global Participation Fund’s goal of advancing ORCID adoption and persistent identifier awareness in underrepresented regions.
ORCID-WACA
ORCID-WACA led by West and Central African Research and Education Network (WACREN) will drive ORCID adoption across West and Central Africa by training 15 ambassadors and engaging 1,000+ researchers, librarians, and staff through multilingual outreach, technical support, and workshops. Leveraging eduID.africa, NREN infrastructure, and regional networks, the project will establish a strong Community of Practice and lay groundwork for a shared Integration Hub to scale adoption, support institutions, and promote equitable participation aligned with the GPF.
SWITCH: Fast-Track ORCID Adoption for Women Technologists in LLMIC Economies
SWITCH (Supporting Women In Technical and ResearCH roles) is an initiative of the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) Foundation. The GPF grant will go toward training 300 women technologists in Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Timor-Leste and Thailand through blended self-paced learning, an online session and a one-day hands-on workshop. Participants create and populate ORCID iDs, link works and champion adoption inside home institutions. Local trainers establish national Community-of-Practice hubs and mentor at least one consortium-candidate university per country, embedding sustainable ORCID use and inclusive research visibility.
Grants for Technical Integration
Strengthening Research Integrity: Expanding Bioethics and ECR Infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa
This project, led by Africa Bioethics Network, which also received a GPF grant in the third round, aims to strengthen ORCID adoption in Sub-Saharan Africa by enhancing Kotahi-based workflows (scholar-led publishing), exploring OJS adaptation, and developing multilingual training for early-career researcher institutions. It includes pilot support for five institutions and a regional ambassador program in underrepresented countries. Outputs will improve sustainable ORCID use and visibility, aligned with the Global Participation Fund’s goal of equitable participation.
