To ensure Department of Energy (DOE)-funded researchers are easily and accurately connected to their works to facilitate the acknowledgement, citation, discovery, and reuse of information, ORCID added the DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) Search & link wizard to its platform on March 1, 2021. Search & link wizards are ORCID’s recommended way for researchers to populate their record. The DOE / OSTI Search & link wizard, accessible within the Works section of an ORCID record, is a new option for researchers to easily import their works from OSTI.GOV into their ORCID record.
We’ve created this step by step guide to help you connect your record to connect your record to DOE / OSTI for automatic, easy, and accurate updates. Let’s get started!
Add Works Using the DOE / OSTI Search & Link Wizard:
A Step by Step Guide
From the Works section in their record, users can select Search & link under Add works and locate DOE / OSTI in the list of organizations. Once the user selects DOE / OSTI, they are prompted to grant DOE / OSTI permission to add and read information on their ORCID record. After authorizing, the user will be taken to OSTI.GOV where they can select works contained in OSTI.GOV to add to the Works section of their ORCID record. DOE / OSTI updates the user’s record with any new records submitted to OSTI when their ORCID iD is contained in the metadata, as long as DOE / OSTI remains a trusted organization for that user.
Navigate to ORCID and select Sign In/Register.
A new window will pop up where the user can choose one of the following three options:
- Sign In to ORCID with user credentials (i.e., email address or ORCID iD and password).
- Register for an ORCID iD. After registration, the user will receive an email from ORCID with a unique link to verify their registration and email address. This email verification improves the security of the ORCID account. Once the user has a verified ORCID iD, the user’s credentials (i.e., email address or ORCID iD and password) will allow Sign In to ORCID.
- Sign In through the user’s institution, Google, or Facebook account and connect to ORCID with the user’s credentials.
Scroll down to the Works section of the ORCID record, hover over +Add works and select Search & link.
Under Link Works, select DOE / OSTI from the list of member organizations.
When using the DOE / OSTI Search & link wizard for the first time, users will need to Authorize access to approve DOE / OSTI to make changes (i.e., add the records the user selects) to their ORCID Works.
Once DOE / OSTI is authorized, the OSTI.GOV page will appear with the green ORCID iD icon next to the user’s ORCID iD name, as shown below. The ORCID Account Integration page will display Authorization successful!, the user’s ORCID Account Details, ORCID Works in OSTI.GOV, and directions for adding works to the user’s ORCID record using OSTI.GOV’s search. Browse DOE / OSTI search results to identify records authored, coauthored, or contributed by the user.
When the user finds records in the search results that they want to add to their ORCID Works, select Add to ORCID Works.
A pop-up text box will appear and confirm that the user wants to add this record to ORCID Works. Select Add to my ORCID Works.
In the search results, works added by the user to their ORCID record will now display In your ORCID Works at the bottom right of the field.
To navigate back to the ORCID Account Integration page, select the user name next to the green ORCID iD icon at the top of the page. Under the ORCID Works in OSTI.GOV tab, the user can view a list of works added to their ORCID record.
