In 2022, we launched ORCID’s Global Participation Fund (GPF) to provide grants under two different programs—Community Development and Outreach and Technical Integration—as a means of improving understanding and encouraging uptake of ORCID in under-represented countries in the Global South. These grants are awarded on a biannual basis in the amount of US$5,000–20,000, with a duration of 12 months. The GPF is one of the initiatives of our Global Participation Program (GPP), which is designed to increase ORCID membership in the Global South.
Grants from the Community Development and Outreach program support local partners in under-represented areas to build ORCID Communities of Practice. These grants can be used to support local outreach activities, training, and tech support resources for the creation and growth of ORCID consortia that serve those regions.
Grants from the Technical Integration program can be used to fund software development to build and update ORCID integrations in open-source systems. This will foster participation in ORCID in currently under-represented regions and support the creation of technical documentation, outreach, and support for resources created through the grants.
ORCID is delighted to announce that we have selected the following four projects to receive funding for the second round of GPF grants:
Community Development and Outreach Grant Recipients
Information and Library Network Centre (INFLIBNET)
The Information and Library Network Centre is an apex body of the government of India, connecting 43,000+ Higher Education(HE) institutions and 40 million scholars including students and faculty members. The Centre provides a Research Information Management (RIM) system to the Indian academic community and has already interconnected 16,000+ institutions and 178,000+ faculty members. The objective of the proposed project is to promote and create awareness of ORCID to interconnect all scholarly communication activities in the country.
Information Training & Outreach Centre for Africa (ITOCA)
Information Training & Outreach Centre for Africa will publicize and promote ORCID across Sub-Saharan Africa & South-East Asia through outreach and promotional services. Its strategy will entail leveraging its existing networks of researchers and academics with the purpose of motivating the communities and soliciting their submissions, thereby creating equal opportunity for the communities to participate in ORCID. This will contribute to ORCID’s goal to increase reach, growth, and community engagement in a more efficient way in the regions.
Public Knowledge Project (PKP)
Building on its Indonesian scholarly publishing contacts, Public Knowledge Project will:
- work with Indonesian university, government, and publisher representatives to establish sustainable ORCID Global Participation Program memberships involving a portion of the country’s 15,000 OJS-using journals, and
- develop Indonesia’s technical capacity for upgrading OJS installations to support utilization of latest integrity features, such as two-way ORCID/journal integrity verification.
University of Sri Jayewardenepura
Presently, ORCID adoption is low in Sri Lanka and Maldives. University of Sri Jayewardenepura envisages this project acting as a catalyst for the creation of communities of practice in Sri Lanka and the Maldives to improve this position. This will be achieved by creating awareness videos in local languages, creating videos from influential researchers, and running workshops promoting the GPF goals and ORCID in general. The project envisages these efforts to create a critical mass of researchers who will use ORCID optimally.
