Several weeks ago the Works Metadata Working Group provided us some recommendations for improving how ORCID Records store and interact with Works. We are excited to share with you our first round of improvements:
Update to the definition of a “duplicate work”
When data about a Work was added to a user’s Record using a search and link wizard, we have always checked to make sure that an existing item was not being re-added. This check used to be extremely rigid – to be considered a duplicate, the data sent to the Record had to match exactly for all fields. With this update, the definition of a duplicate has been relaxed to: any work from the same data source that has a matching name/title and/or matching external identifier. When these fields match, the reimport will be ignored so no duplicate will be created. We still allow users to add information to their records from different sources about the same Work.
External Identifiers are reunited with their abbreviations
We have always supported a comprehensive list of external work identifier types. These names had been spelled out in the interface, for example, ISSN was listed as “International Standard Serial Number.” This treatment made it difficult to find some types. These work identifiers are now preceded by their abbreviations in the interface, making them easier to find.
Works – New fields!
We have added a several new fields to the metadata for works including:
- Journal Title: the name of the publication housing your work. This information had sometimes been included in the subtitle field, and now has its very own home.
- Language Support: you can now specify what language you used when describing your work. Filling in this field will help improve accuracy in searches, and provide greater accuracy when your trusted organizations are reading this data.

Translated Title: A great recommendation from the Works Metadata Working Group! Many authors would like to include a translation of the title of their work, and this field provides this opportunity. It comes with a field to specify the language of the translation.
- Country of Publication: An added field to make the metadata for works more compatible with the CASRAI data dictionary.
