Each year, after ORCID’s Annual Report is published, we host a Community Town Hall in two time zones to share highlights from our previous year and discuss plans for the year ahead. In case you missed our most recent Town Hall in March, you can watch the replay here and download the presentation here to view the slides in more detail. Additionally, we invite you to peruse the 2023 Annual Report for a deeper dive on the progress we’ve achieved on our strategic plan that guide our activities from year to year.
Below are some of the points of interest brought forward by members of our senior team.
“We don’t really talk about the number of ORCID iD’s anymore because what’s more interesting is how many records are actively being used,” said ORCID Executive Director Chris Shillum. “So we now focus on our active researchers in any one year, which is steadily climbing, and as of now is about 8.2 million. We have those users in every country in the world now.”
“In 2023 we increased the size of our network of interconnected systems by 18 percent, aided by our efforts to make it easier to both integrate and participate in systems with the ORCID Registry,” said Ivo Wijnbergen, Director of Engagement. “We’re seeing more integrations being added almost every day.”
“We already have substantial adoption across the globe. This year we grew our direct membership with 145 new organizations, including our first in Lithuania and Serbia,” said Director of Communications Julie Petro.
“At the end of January this year, after 10 months of very careful preparation, we moved the hosting of the ORCID Registry to Amazon Web Services, and there are a whole range of benefits with that,” said Will Simpson Director, Technology. “We’re already much more resilient to outages and we continue to work on security and resilience.”
“We’ll continue to work on privacy,” said Director of Operations Tommy Tepper, as well as add a new initiative building on work that’s already been done on cybersecurity. We’ll be re-writing the privacy policy that’s available on our site to improve the clarity and transparency. In terms of cybersecurity, we’re going to adopt a framework that will give us a plan of action for years to come.”
In addition to improving our staff benefits across ORCID, we continue to track our internal and external DEI efforts, which you can see on our public Trello board,” said Director of Staff Experience Stephanie Harley. “The senior team meets quarterly to track progress on this board and keep ourselves accountable.”
