ORCID public data file 2024
Want to take a peek into the data that’s been written to the ORCID Registry in 2024? The public data file is available here in XML format but can be converted to JSON by using our ORCID Conversion Library in our Github repository. This data represents a snapshot of all public data in the ORCID Registry associated with an ORCID record that was created or claimed by an individual as of September 25, 2024.
ORCID releases this file under a Creative Commons CC0 1.0 universal public domain dedication. This means that ORCID makes no copyright, related, or neighboring rights claims to the aggregated data.
ORCID’s connection to Open Access principles
In 2012, ORCID was founded as an open infrastructure provider. The O in ORCID stands for Open, which is also one of ORCID’s three values, along with Trusted and Inclusive. Our founders also established a set of 10 principles that we continue to adhere to today, many of which are rooted in open access.
ORCID’s seventh founding principle states our annual commitment to the scholarly community regarding the data that is contributed to the ORCID Registry, which we call our public data file.
All data contributed to ORCID by researchers or claimed by them will be available in standard formats for free download (subject to the researchers’ own privacy settings) that are updated once a year and released under a CC0 waiver.
Every year, in accordance with our Privacy Policy we release the public data file during Open Access Week!
Guidelines for community use
Over the years, researchers have let us know the ways that this unique data set has made its way into the scholarly record. At the time of writing, the 2023 Public Data File was downloaded more than 13,000 times!
We offer guidelines for community use in our Public Data File Use Policy. Here are some excerpts:
- Spread the Word: Please give attribution to ORCID as the source of the Public Data File and link back to this page (https://info.orcid.org/public-data-file-use-policy/) where technologically feasible, to facilitate access for others.
- Be Fair and Lawful: Do not modify any data so as to make it false, incomplete, defamatory, or misleading.
- Respect Others: Respect the rights of privacy and publicity of the individuals featured in the Public Data File. In particular, do not use email to send junk mail, chain mail, spam, pyramid schemes, or other unsolicited bulk mail. If you are using email for commercial or other purposes, give people the opportunity to opt-out of receiving communications from you.
- Keep us posted: We are interested in hearing about ways in which people are making use of the Public Data File. Please contact us if you are willing to share your experiences.
We’re proud to support the Open Access community by continuing our part to build open infrastructure. Every year we contribute this data freely to the research community and are delighted to see the many ways it has become part of the scholarly record to advance collective knowledge. If you are already using or planning to use the file, we’d love to know about your use case! Visit the ORCID blog for examples of previous use cases and published research.
