Members are the bedrock of ORCID. Not only do they sustain our global Registry, but they also provide the vital insights that fuel our collective growth.
This post highlights the real-world experiences and value stories drawn directly from a recent survey conducted among members of the ORCID Japan Consortium. As an early adopter of ORCID, Japan established a robust national consortium led by Academic Exchange for Information Environment and Strategy (AXIES).
Now, just over six years since its creation, we have reached the perfect milestone to reflect on ORCID adoption in Japan. To explore current membership benefits, ongoing challenges, and the future outlook, we conducted a comprehensive survey from February to March 2026. We received responses from 18 out of the 23 consortium members, each walking us through their unique membership journey—the why, the what, and the how of ORCID adoption in their organization.
The value of ORCID membership: trust, visibility, and automation
For Japan Consortium members, the decision to join ORCID was driven by a shared commitment to improving international visibility, aligning with open science policies, and reducing administrative burdens. The survey reveals that institutional integration is the absolute key to maximizing membership value and fulfilling these goals.
When asked specifically which services they have implemented ORCID into, respondents shared diverse examples, including:
- Yokohama National University connects ORCID with their Education and Research Activity Database, pushing verified affiliation data to researchers’ ORCID profiles and pulling publication records back.
- National Institutes of Natural Sciences integrated ORCID into NOUS, their joint research management system — allowing researchers to import their publication records from ORCID into applications, and automatically pushing award information back to their ORCID profiles.
- Kyoto University operates RIS-ORCID, a dedicated synchronization system connecting their Education and Research Activity Database with ORCID in both directions.
- Nara Institute of Science and Technology and Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University assert verified institutional affiliations to researchers’ ORCID records — NAIST via Society to ORCID by Atlas, and OIST via the Affiliation Manager.
Since integrating ORCID into their systems, organizations have seen marked improvements in workflow efficiency—specifically through automated data exchange and seamless interoperability among different services. Crucially, integration builds institutional trust, allowing institutions to assert validated affiliation information directly to their researchers’ ORCID profiles.
As one member elegantly put it:
“ORCID enables research institutions to actively commit to the accuracy and trustworthiness of scholarly information”
Another member highlighted the advantage of connecting local workflows to global visibility:
“The great advantage is being able to include ORCID when recording repository registration results in overseas databases.”
When asked to describe the core values of membership, members with ORCID integration consistently emphasized three pillars:
1. Elevating international visibility
ORCID serves as a powerful bridge between local research information and global discovery. One respondent noted that ORCID is
“one of the powerful tools to raise the international recognition of our affiliated researchers,”
while another noted that it allows them to
“streamline local administrative work and reflect the results globally.”
Another member shared how integration automates repository workflows:
“Tracking our outputs across Crossref, DataCite, Web of Science, and Scopus has become far easier [via our ORCID integration]. We can now automatically prompt researchers to deposit their work into our repository—triggered directly through those database APIs.”
2. Streamlining researcher disambiguation
Name ambiguity remains a major hurdle in global research, but one that ORCID helps to resolve. Members highly value how ORCID “leads to improved accuracy of author identification,” with one summarizing the core benefit simply:
“The appeal is that the PID [Persistent Identifier] is uniquely determined.”
3. Improving information quality
High-quality metadata requires a team effort. Members explained that “by not only publishers but also institutions actively using it, the quality of ORCID profiles can be improved, enabling further spread and utilization.” A respondent highly valued the quality of information added as researcher activities, as it can be synchronised with local systems. Overcoming roadblocks through community collaboration
While integrating ORCID into institutional workflows has yielded significant value, the journey has not been without its hurdles. Japan Consortium members noted that primary challenges centered around allocating both human and financial resources to adopt and maintain ORCID.
At the root of this challenge is a fundamental, yet sometimes neglected concept: the values and benefits of PIDs must be clearly articulated so that researchers, university administrators, and university decision-makers can truly prioritize and take action on adoption.
This is exactly where the power of a consortium shines. The Community of Practice formed by the Japan Consortium is a critical solution for navigating these roadblocks. This survey, alongside ongoing collaboration with ORCID, serves as tangible evidence of real digital transformation within the community.
Additionally, members cited technical challenges regarding API implementation, often tied to vendor dependency and a local shortage of IT expertise. The Affiliation Manager, a tool available to consortia members, has proven particularly effective for Japanese institutions—enabling them to assert validated affiliation data, [accompanied by a Trust Marker], without requiring developer resources. In addition, a few Japanese vendors are currently going through the ORCID Certified Service Provider (CSP) review, with approvals expected in the near future. The newest CSP is DB-Sprial from SRA Tohoku.

Next horizon: Scaling success across the Japanese research ecosystem
Through the survey, the ORCID Japan Consortium identified strengthening documentation and developing localized case studies as key priorities for contributing to broader community growth.
The feedback from this survey highlights both the tangible value of organizational membership and the shared challenges we must address together. Moving forward, the goal is to build a future where the Consortium Lead (AXIES) and its members not only deepen their own internal adoption of ORCID, but also effectively communicate these success stories to the wider research ecosystem in Japan.
The first six years of the ORCID Japan consortium mark an incredible beginning, and we look forward to driving even greater progress, connection, and transparency in the years ahead.
