Between the rise of automated paper mills, identity fraud, and the unintentional visibility gaps caused by broken metadata, maintaining trust in research has become an urgent priority for the global scholarly ecosystem.
To tackle these challenges, we recently hosted a two-part Research Integrity webinar in collaboration with Yvonne Campfens (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5406-5809), Executive Director of the OA Switchboard .
While both conversations pointed to the same ultimate goal—improving global confidence in academic publishing—they approached the issue from two different vantage points in the research lifecycle. At the heart of both is the shared need for validated metadata provenance, which ORCID highlights on a record with a green checkmark to indicate that it is a Trust Marker. These Trust Markers indicate that the piece of data has been asserted directly from a validated source. It’s important to note that ORCID does not itself validate items on a record, but rather provides the open infrastructure to display the provenance of the data, which can let users see quickly which items were added by trusted third parties.
ORCID records amass trustworthiness over time from data asserted by validated sources, such as affiliations added by research institutions, grant data added by funding agencies, and works by publishers. Only ORCID members can add data to ORCID records, and when they do so, they are contributing valuable information that gets propagated throughout the entire research ecosystem.

True cross-sector collaboration requires open, community-standard tools.
